Digital Storytelling: Tom, Mary and Bird

It would not be wrong to say that “Digital Storytelling” is one of the most fantastic projects of this semester. It is full of fun and enjoyment. First of all, I and my partner Esma Halıcı decided to make a “how to?” video. However, we saw that there are millions of “how to?” videos regarding billions of issues. Therefore, we decided to create a fictional story which has a message for people especially for young learners. Unfortunately, we live in a world where animal rights and their needs are ignored and not respected. This sad truth made us to create a fictional story regarding a bird which lost its happiness after being separated from the nature and put in a cage by two kids. At the end of the story the kids understood that animals are happier when they are free in their natural habitat.
We tried to create the story from the perspective of kids themselves. That’s why, we used very basic drawings, and very basic sentences during the story. It was our first time that we created such a story, but we enjoyed the process very much.
This project would be very beneficial for the students because it fosters creativity and collaboration. It maximizes the level of communication between/among students. Critical thinking skill also develops dramatically. I believe that students learn best in situations in which they are made free to create their own products. “Digital Storytelling” is very suitable for this. Therefore, I will benefit from the opportunities of this project in my future classes.
